By the time this was written I had got the idea of doing a set of songs focusing on different kinds of dragon. This concept of a dragon who lives in a city and has all their hoard in the bank was quite an appealing one.
It may owe something to the game Caketropolis which puts dragons in a modern setting with air-conditioned dens. It also gently pokes its tongue out at a couple of Rush songs.
I think the final verse was the hardest to write, trying to cram the source of the dragon's income into the verse structure wasn't easy.
lyrics
Modern-Day Dragon
A modern-day dragon’s all I want to be
But I can feel the Elders looking down on me
I don’t need a messy pile of gold no more
When I can sleep on a carpet on a heated floor
‘Cause my hoard is in the banks’ computers
And my den is in a penthouse flat
I’m a modern-day dragon and there ain’t nothing wrong with that
A modern-day dragon’s all I want to be
‘Cause it beats having hunters trying to murder me
I don’t see no point in fighting tooth and claw
When you can just buy your meals from a superstore
Well my hoard is in the banks’ computers
And my den is in a penthouse flat
I’m a modern-day dragon and there ain’t nothing wrong with that
A modern-day dragon’s all I want to be
But I can feel the Elders looking down on me
I earned all my riches sticking to the laws
I invented a keyboard you can use with claws
And my hoard is in the banks’ computers
And my den is in a penthouse flat
I’m a modern-day dragon and there ain’t nothing wrong with that
