At the time the Game Of Thrones series was largely unknown, so the resemblance to the series' proper title is coincidental. I think I actually borrowed it from the levels on Hexen...
This piece had it origins in a track I wrote years earlier, simply called 'Song 17'. The opening theme is from that project. I extended it and wrote some kind of hypnotic melodies and counterpoints to go with it. You may notice that it switches around 4:40 - this is actually some of the earlier riffs backwards.
Even with all these changes it felt a little empty, so I added some more vocals from the Radio Project and played those backwards. For good measure I took a fresh roll of tape and stuck a microphone out the window to try and get some environmental sounds. A little echo and I got a nicely psychedelic effect going. The 1/4" recorder was having problems with the capstan drive around that time and this caused the speed to do odd things, including slowing down as the tape tensions equalised. Among other things I managed to catch the sound of a dog scaring a cat away, which I reprised at the end of the song as a sort of bonus track.
Alas, I forgot to label the effects tape and accidentally erased it later so the only existing recordings of those sounds are the echo-laden ones on the multitrack.
